TRIP REPORT

7/24/84

From Georgetown, Rich, Mitch & I drove up to the Grays & Torreys trailhead at a stream crossing and parked. It was cold and very windy in the deep, wide glacial valley on the approach. We followed the trail to a ridge leading toward the saddle between Grays and Torreys and there found a large mountain goat herd, which we detoured around so as not to antagonize the two males who seemed very protective of the rest of the herd.

Torreys Peak looked more impressive than Grays, so we decided to climb it first and then return via Grays if the weather held (it was clouding up a bit). Rich and Mitch angled right across a snowfield below the saddle to get to the Torreys ridge; I didn't feel confident without an ice ax so I climbed to the left around the snow, and then down to the saddle and followed them up the rest of the way. There were some very ragged goats on the summit shedding their winter layers. We took some goat pictures and headed toward Grays.
