TRIP REPORT

7/22/84

We were so impressed at the ease with which we'd done four 14ers in one week on our last trip that we came back the next year determined to climb 8-10 in two weeks, and to get in some sightseeing along the way. We had a very comprehensive plan and tight schedule for this trip with no allowance for bad weather, car problems, sickness, etc.
We flew into Denver and drove to Idaho Springs where we met a friend (Mitch) who was traveling around the country, living out of his van, looking for the 'perfect place' to settle down. We had dinner, played hearts, planned strategy, and went to bed (us in a motel, Mitch in his van). In the morning, we got up, resumed our stale doughnut & lukewarm coffee breakfast ritual, and drove the Mt. Evans road up to about 11,200' (as close as we could tell from our contour map). This was to ensure at least a 3000' vertical climb, which some people consider a requirement for an 'official' bagged peak.

We hiked near the road up to Summit Lake and followed a windy ridge to the summit. On the top we met a few mountain goats who were curious but stayed a little distance away. We decided to take a more scenic route down, so we continued on the far side of the summit ridge to a second, slightly lower summit, and then dropped down and left to the beginning of the Sawtooth ridge over to Bierstadt. From here we wandered across boulders to the right and picked a chute to descend back down to Summit Lake, which we skirted on the north side and then followed the road back to the car. There were a lot of people, a few photographers, and an artist painting at the lake.

We drove back into Idaho Springs where I climbed to a few old mine shafts and found some nice pyrite and chalcopyrite samples. We had dinner and played some more hearts as a hailstorm pounded our rental car (an AMC Eagle 4WD with bald tires and a very weak engine) with 1 1/2" stones that left a few dents we had to explain to Alamo.
