TRIP REPORT

7/28/86

After climbing Humboldt, we drove to the San Luis trailhead at Stewart Creek. The last part of the drive was in the dark with a lot of tricky turns and the fuel gauge warning light on. We parked at the trailhead. Richard set himself up to sleep in the car, while I arranged a bivouac outside nearby. After a short nap on the road, the temperature dropped below freezing so I moved my bivouac site to the back seat of the car. The temperature there soon dropped too, but we couldn't turn on the engine to run the heater because the car was so low on gas.

We had an uncomfortable sleepless night and finally got up around 5:30 and put our cold, cold boots back on. We hiked upstream - it was a long trail through the woods, but we eventually reached the tree line and saw the peak, which still looked a long way off. (It was a long way off, and the peak we were looking at wasn't even the real summit, which was about 3/4 mile and 300' beyond).

From the end of the creek we climbed up the left-hand ridge to a saddle, then followed a cairned trail to the summit. There was a broad vista of rolling peaks and wilderness. Coming back we felt really dirty and tired. When we reached the car, Richard had to use extreme high-mileage driving tactics until we coasted into the nearest gas station (50 miles from the trailhead) completely empty. Whew.

After tanking up, we drove to Lake City, got a motel room, cleaned up, and felt much better.
